Short Biography
Nils Burwitz:
German artist, sculptor, lecturer; born 1940, Swinemünde.
Emigrates to South Africa in 1958.
B.A. Fine Arts degree, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg;
post graduate studies in London, Fribourg, Salzburg.
1976 settles in Valldemossa, Mallorca.
Stained glass windows: Spain: Palma de Mallorca; Anglican Church of St. James and St. Philip (1991), Santa Eulalia (1993), Consolat de Mar (1999); Mallorca; Rose-window-Basilica in Monastery of Lluch (1994), St Peter & St. Paul in Algaida (1999), Royal Carthusian Monastery in Valldemossa, (2004), Monastery of Cura, (2005), Germany – Ergoline Training Centre in Windhagen (1999); England – East Worldham, (2001).
Founder-Libra Press 1984;
Opened Funda Art Centre, Soweto 1986;
Over 100 Public Collections, including the Albertina (Vienna), Albertinum (Dresden), Library of Congress (Washington, USA), Boston, Buffalo and New York Public Library (USA), Kunsthalle (Dresden, and Hamburg), Museum Ludwig, (Cologne), National Museum (Warsaw), Fitzwilliam Museum, (Cambridge), British Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum (London) have acquired his work.
Honours & awards: Art Critics Award-(Ljubljana) 1975; First Prize-Ciutat de Palma (Palma de Mallorca),1981; First National Prize for Watercolour-Acuarela Guarro Casas, (Barcelona), Prix de la Ville de Monaco, 1980; First Prize -Monument for Tolerance (Zahor-1691), 1995. European Citizen of the Balearic Islands award, 1999, Premio Diario de Mallorca, 2003, Premi Populars Cadena COPE-Bishop Teodor Ubeda, 2004.
